Four Eyes

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

I have horrible vision. I've been wearing glasses since elementary school and switched to contacts in high school. I have always favored contacts, but terrible eye allergies have prevented me from doing so the last few years. Several months of the year I have to instead rely on glasses.  Without corrective lenses, I couldn't get through my day. Mario has also worn glasses or contacts most of his life, but his vision isn't as severe as mine.

Last fall, posts about online eyewear companies were lighting up the blogosphere. Without the prohibitive cost that typically comes with prescription glasses, people were experimenting with styles they normally wouldn't.

I was hesitant to order prescription glasses online, but when I won a gift certificate to Firmoo back in December, I decided to give it a go. What did I have to lose? I actually ordered two pairs: one with the gift certificate and another through the 'first pair free' promotion.

Not long after, Firmoo contacted me about reviewing a pair on my blog. Seeing as I already had two pairs on the way, I gave Mario my free glasses.  I thought it would make for a great his-and-hers review, which I hadn't seen before.

The first step before ordering was to obtain a written eyeglass prescription  from my provider. The ladies there are usually really helpful, but they got a little snippy about giving me my pupillary distance (PD), a must for ordering online. After some Google searching I found this is not uncommon, as this measurement is only necessary if you are ordering glasses...and most providers don't want you going out and buying from other establishments. They did give it to me, but I wasn't very happy with them. Anyway, Firmoo has an easy DIY PD measuring page, so if you run into this problem they have you covered.

Ordering was a breeze. You choose the style you like, enter the info from your prescription, and a great new pair of glasses are on their way. Mario and I uploaded our photos so we could virtually try on the pairs we liked to see if they worked on our faces.

I have a hard time choosing glasses because they tend to squeeze above my ears or the nose pieces begin to dig after a long day. Needless to say, I was worried about ordering glasses that I couldn't try on. Honestly, these glasses are so, so comfortable! They have the spring ear pieces that flex outward, so I never get an ache from too-tight glasses. The frames are so lightweight that I barely notice them. Mario is having the same (great) experience with his. I asked what he thought while writing this post and he said "I love them!".

I definitely went out of my comfort zone when ordering these. I felt less pressure to love them forever, so I focused more on what I like now as opposed to what I will like for years and years. With Firmoo, I can own several different styles, which I had honestly never considered.

I chose a pair of rectangular tortoiseshell glasses (they have since been discontinued) and a pair with square frames. They have black opaque frames with clear blue accents (you can find them here). Both are light as a feather and I love them so. The square pair in the first and third photos is way out of my comfort zone, but that's what I like about them. My husband has joked that I look like Reuben from the Oceans movies, but I like to think I look like my crime fighting superhero, Velma Dinkley.

Bottom line: This was a great experience. I love my glasses. They each came with a hard case, cloth bag, cleaning cloth, and mini repair kit. My next order will likely be sunglasses...prescription and non-prescription. I am loving my new perspective on eyeglass ownership. My insurance allows for contacts or glasses, but not both in a single year. Contacts usually win out. Now I have options!

*Full disclosure: We got Mario's glasses free of charge in exchange for this review (about a $40 value). I paid separate shipping charges for my two pairs of glasses, as they were purchased prior to Firmoo contacting me. These opinions are my own and I was in no way persuaded to give them a positive review. If there was something I didn't like about their product, I'd tell you.

  3. I just posted about this very thing in January! Been wearing glasses since elementary school and also cannot wear contacts anymore. I looked online for glasses but was too scared to try them. I went way out of my comfort zone too and got brown tortoise shell square frames, kinda like your second picture...they are actually from the men's collection and I love them! Ya gotta love how you look everyday!
