Tales from a long (but not long enough) weekend.

Monday, January 21, 2013

We placed little expectation on ourselves over this 4-day weekend. And although I need to finish cleaning off the disaster that was my desk in preparation for homework, overall I'm ready to dive back in tomorrow.

It all started Friday, perhaps the most productive day of the weekend. Kiddo's school was having a contra dance fundraiser. I had never heard of such a thing until we moved to New England. Apparently they were big in the 70s and 80s, and are now a common way to raise funds for a town or organization. Think polka-folk dance fusion were someone calls the moves (Peel the banana, swing your partner, do-si-do around your opposite, etc.) like in square dancing.

I'd volunteered at one before, but never danced. We were supposed to drop off the cupcakes and head to dinner, but Jared wanted to stay "Sooo bad, Mom". So we did. For the whole two hours. Being the introvert that I am, this may have resembled my worst social nightmare. Husband wasn't there, so I took pictures and joined in on a couple of dances when backed in a corner invited.

Kiddo had a blast! Although it was a bit (or very) outside my comfort zone, I'd do anything to see that little stinker having so much fun.

Not long after we got home from the dance, Mario got home from his 7-day work trip. He brought a little gift with him...in the form of a cold virus. He though he was going to rupture an eardrum on the airplane and overall looked awful.

I felt terrible for him, but I also feared for us. There are literally four weeks out of the year where we simply can't handle a cold...the first week of a semester, and the last. As Murphy and his law would have it, I was also sick during December's finals.

Needless to say, there were a lot of oranges, soup, and Emergen-C being consumed this weekend. Along with a questionable cupcake and coffee breakfast I may or may not have consumed on Sunday morning while the rest of the house slept.

I was a bit annoyed but not surprised when I developed that undeniable sneeze-y nose and scratchy throat yesterday, so now I'm on damage control. Neti pot, Sudafed, and even more Emergen-C. Good thing we have about 20 pounds of citrus fruit left over from last month's school sale.

No one is safe from bunny ears. Not even the cat.

This was a common sight this weekend...thank goodness for Star Wars marathons on TV.

There was also some of this...because a proper stay-in weekend isn't complete without Chinese takeout. I loaded up on the veggie dishes as only someone trying to thwart illness does.

I realized for the five hundredth time that I am going to have a lot less free time starting tomorrow, and our room still looks like a rather cheery jail cell without any art. So I gathered up old wood frames from the basement and removed old photos from others. Then I painted them using the same white paint we used to on the bedroom trim. It seemed to work fine.

There is a large wall next to my side of the bed which I hope to adorn with a white-framed gallery wall. I don't want it to be too stark, so in addition to my confetti art, I have decided to mix in a couple silver or white glittery frames.

I love Sarah's idea over at [life of love]. You mix the glitter into Mod Podge and make a paste that can be applied to almost any surface. The appeal is that the glitter is contained as opposed to being sprinkled on top, which usually leads to a mess during application and every time I move the object from now until eternity. You can find her tutorial here.

I wasn't the only one hopping on the crafty bandwagon. Kiddo brought out his Origami Yoda books and folded away. If you have a boy in your life, these books are a must. They are super easy to make and keep him busy for hours. A mom's dream, really.

After writing this post, I discovered this link-up. It was meant to be!
