I loved the prompts this week! I photographed some of them over and over, but finally came to a realization: I was simply trying too hard. Once I stopped over thinking things, I started seeing my photos from a different perspective.
Overall this was a good week, but I am particularly proud of a couple. On we go:
The Small Things
Kiddo pulled out his old Thomas the Train set this week. We have considered selling them at times because he's a bit old for them now, and they are worth quite a bit, but seeing him build a track and combine it with his 'big boy' toys is why we haven't. Watching boys play is one of life's wonders. The sounds, the imagination, the lack of inhibition...I love it all. It got me thinking that we might just keep them forever.
Illustration
This was the last photo I took because I was at a bit of a loss. I took a lot of photos, but none struck a chord. I was sitting on the edge of my bed, staring at the shelf in my room, and spied my two favorite childhood books. As I flipped through one, I decided to snap it. This obviously means more to me than those who didn't grow up reading this book, but I decided to use it. If you haven't read Mister Dog, you should. It's darling.
Valentine
This is another prompt I photographed over and over. I snapped an old Valentine's Day card I have tacked to the cork board above my desk. I drew a heart in the snow. Nothing. Then, as I was looking through the photos I took throughout the week, I came across this one I snapped at breakfast Wednesday morning. Duh. Although I tend not to subscribe to the hubbub surrounding this 'holiday', he's my valentine. I simply choose to acknowledge that every day as opposed to one day a year.
Work of Art
Mother Nature has a way of humbling us. This weekend, and our visit from Nemo, was no exception. The snow was really coming down, and horizontally, thanks to 50 mph winds. I have used the last couple snow storms as a means to practice my photography skills and was excited to capture this moment. It was like tiny white comets flying by.
Window Beauty
This is my favorite photo this week (or perhaps ever). Kiddo and I had a few extra minutes before a meeting at his school, so we took the opportunity to visit a nearby pond. It flooded a couple weeks ago when we had unusually warm weather and lots of rain followed by extreme cold. The entire park is covered in floating sheets of ice. I had Jared pick one up and snapped away. I managed to capture his sweet little essence in this photograph, and I couldn't love it more. It is moments like these that make me want to become a better photographer.
Wow! I love the way the snow looks in your work of art AND your little guy with that ice! What a cool idea. Great work with the prompts :)
ReplyDeleteI love the window beauty shot also, what a great idea. My little boy is now 14 and 6'1" but he and I used to play Thomas Tank Engine stuff a bunch. I think all that stuff is gone now but your pic brought back some memories. I love your illustration. Used to read to my son also every night before bed and I miss the illustrations.
ReplyDeleteMy daughters had a wooden train set when they were toddlers. I still have it and they LOVE playing with it when young family members come to visit. Keep it forever!! :). I love you Valentine pic....and I agree with your sentiments regarding the holiday. And that last photo is great....love that smile through the ice.
ReplyDeleteThat last picture is really cool! :)
ReplyDeleteWindow beauty is a true beauty of a shot. Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteThanks Stephanie! I really love how it turned out.
DeleteI LOVE YOUR WINDOW BEAUTY!!! Great idea for the illustration prompt too and the work or art is very pretty-love the snow flying around :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lish! I think I'll get the ice one printed...I love it so! I'm still working on the right settings to properly capture snow, and am always happy when it works out. :)
DeleteLast shot is amazing. It jumped right out of the linky at me. My nephew too, is getting to big for Thomas, but having a tough time letting go. He may save them for his children. I understand they were super helpful with the potty training.
ReplyDeleteI think letting go of trying to fill prompts helps it happen. Anytime I set up a shot it feels emotionally flat. Just finding something and then realizing it works is much more fun for me. Hope you can figure it out. The shot of your Valentine certainly works.
You got Nemo too! Insane, right? Boston is a sea of white! Love your shots!
ReplyDeleteWindow beauty is a wonderful capture. I like everything about it. Overall, a very nice set of photos. Have a blessed Sunday.
ReplyDeleteI vote with you on the last being a favorite - too cool (or perhaps should I say, too cold!). I am so happy for you that your sweetie allows you to post a picture of him. I am absolutely forbidden to even consider it, let alone carry through with it.
ReplyDeleteI so enjoy your visits over to my blog and am glad we ran into each other through the scavenger hunt as I am equally entertained on your blog.
Hi Nicki! I think my new found obsession with photography has gone to his head. I find self portraits on my camera sometimes or get asked to "take a picture of this!" :) Thank you for your lovely comment...it made my day!
DeleteNice shots! I love the last one, very inspired Window Beauty.
ReplyDelete♥
Thank you! I simply love it. :)
DeleteOhhh... you really nailed it this week! I love your "white comets" and your smiling boy through ice. Lovely shots :D
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful set of images. That last one is simply spectacular!
ReplyDeleteJared looking through the shard of ice is magnificent. That flying snow is magical, too!
ReplyDeleteThe best kind of Valentine's Day is an every day, in person- kind!!!
