Kiddo was in fine form Thursday morning. We finally left the house after hibernating for two days only to find that Mr. Grouchy didn't want to put clothes on and face civilization. But a warm drink and some lively company transformed his mood. I hope he doesn't grow up to be a shut-in surrounded by stacks of old newspapers. While we talked him into clothing, he has not yet made nice with his comb. Don't sweat the bedhead, I say.

After breakfast we went to exchange a couple of Mario's gifts, but found that the store was closed. Instead, we took a scenic route through town and viewed southern New Hampshire through snow-covered glasses.

Then we came home, watched the newest Sherlock Holmes movie (one of Mario's stocking stuffers), and ate his new [let's use up the rest of the root veggies from our farmshare] invention: Butternut Squash and Carrot Soup. It. Is. Amazing. After some initial griping about having to try something new, Mr. Picky ate two bowls. If that's not a testament to its greatness, I don't know what is.

I also took the mellow evening as an opportunity to catch up on blog posts. There are so many things I have been meaning to write about, and I actually have the time to write about them, but it seems that my attempt to escape the 'real world' has lead to lapses between posts lately.  I put pen to paper, so to speak, and have loads of shenanigans to show for it. Except that I wanted to post them all at once, which would defeat the purpose.

A little adventure and little lounging. The best of both worlds.

These Lazy Days

“If you don’t get lost, there’s a chance you may never be found.”

–Anonymous

A couple weekends ago we went for a lovely fall drive through middle New England. It was a relaxing, Pyrex-hunting, apple-picking, family-bonding jaunt. It was a windows down, cool fall breeze in our hair, not sure where we are going kind of day. In other words, the best kind of day.

My husband is a hot dog connoisseur. So it wasn't surprising that, when lunch time came around, he had already located a hot dog joint. It was a lovely time. The boys played Frisbee while we waited for our food, and we gorged ourselves on naughty deliciousness.

I like hot dogs...but I don't have the love affair my husband shares with them. When I was pregnant with my son I had my first Chicago dog. Then I ate them regularly until he was born. Which probably explains his desire to eat them every night for dinner.

Hot dogs have become quite the "it" food as of late. Gourmet hot dogs are not uncommon, and this trend has breathed new life into the ever-present hot dog industry. This place was no exception.

Cheers!
The man doesn't play around.
The purist . . . although Martha says ketchup on hot dogs is uncouth.
My avocado dog. It was awesome. And healthy, right?
Oh, yeah.

Here's to getting lost with the family. And to more days like this one.

Hot Diggity Dog

After our apple-picking marathon on Sunday, we decided that some barbeque would hit the spot. The Top of the Hill Grill, in Brattleboro, Vermont is so much fun. And delish. My husband made the observation that we ate there on Memorial Day, then again the day before Labor Day. For us, Summer 2012 started and ended at this place. There is something really cool about that.

The menu is composed of paper plates backs decorated and placed around the window. I greatly respect the copious amount of glitter paint used.
The "Top of the Hill" part. I love dinner with a view.
My dinner. I don't usually eat pork, but I had to make an exception.
A man and his meat. In the spirit of transparency: Mr. Picky did NOT eat the beans and coleslaw. We had them serve his cornbread separately so that it didn't touch the other food. We've been down that particular road before and prefer to avoid it. His picky eating is probably the thing I have the least patience for.
He was all in.
Banana Boy. They had a hammock that J couldn't get enough of.
Apple-picking, meat-eating, sunset-watching hot tubber. He works for a spa manufacturer . . . so he really is hot tub obsessed.

After dinner we embarked on the scenic drive home. It really is lovely. Along the way we stopped at a small dam and played by the river.

View from the bridge that separates New Hampshire and Vermont
Enjoying the scenery.
The kid has never seen a ledge he didn't want to walk on. Sidewalk shmidewalk.

An impromptu rock-skipping lesson. Mario's rocks skip for days. It's a rather wonderful talent.

It was such a great day! Without realizing it, I live for days like this. It is so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle and stress of daily life that I often for get to live in the now. This day was all about the present. What a gift.

It Ended Where It Began

“I cannot endure to waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house.”

Nathaniel Hawthorne

My husband has brought up apple-picking too many times to count over the last several days. In fact, he called our two favorite orchards and got the lowdown on what is ripe, what isn't, and what their crop yields are like this year. This morning he said, "Would you be interesting in apple picking today?" I didn't see that coming at all [sarcasm]. I love it, too, but prefer a more laid back approach as opposed to "Can we go now? How about now? Today?"

My idea of Apple picking: Getting lost amongst the beautiful fruit trees. Talking to the boys about anything and everything. Wearing galoshes and a comfy cardigan. Bliss.

Fall is my favorite season. I quite literally look forward to it all year. I was born in October. I love Halloween. I greatly enjoy the cool weather and soft, comfortable clothing. The temps are not oppressive like summer and winter. I could go on and on. Despite the stress that accompanies the fall semester, I find this season calming. So in the spirit of the impending fall season, I am posting a few favorites and some lust-worthy finds. Enjoy!

Shir Delight Outfit by Athleta
I love this look! It can have many variations, but the essence is this: boots with warm tights and a dress or skirt. Oh, and a latte in hand. It is casual, simple and yet so chic. I'm not normally a hat person, but this makes me want to become one. It pulls the whole outfit together.

Printed Cardigan by Boden
I feel like I can't go wrong when I wear a cardigan. They can tie a ho-hum outfit together, forgive a few bulges here and there, and gives you the freedom to button up or take it off when the temperature fluctuates. I own many cardigans and am always on the lookout for a unique print or style. A solid cardigan has a definite place in my wardrobe, but I live for the quirky prints. [FYI: I love this whole outfit above. I ripped this page out of the catalog and keep it in the 'caught my eye' folder. Effortless chic is my forever goal]

Seasonless Silk Comforter & Crushed Silk Quilt by Garnet Hill

I sleep so much better in autumn. This simple, mod platform bed covered in silk blankets makes me want to snuggle up with a book all day. We recently had our down comforter cleaned and are going to have to break it out of the dry cleaning bag very soon. We upgraded our old decrepit mattress to a memory foam and bought new bedroom furniture this spring. Having a comfortable yet beautiful space makes all the difference.

My favorite fall movie. It's about a group of adults who are invited back to the summer camp they went to every year as kids. It is hilarious and touching. It is in my top five for sure.

We are off to spend some time together. It will involve apples. I'll tell you all about it tomorrow.
