Despite a blogging respite over the last few days, I have little idea what to write about. I feel a certain pressure to produce something profound, but alas. I keep thinking I will be infused with inspiration once my coffee kicks in, but I've burned my tongue twice and am now convinced Starbucks brews their coffee at 1000 degrees. How can it still be so hot?! Git. In. Mah. Belleh.

I should be studying for what will undoubtedly be a brutal exam next Monday. I considered writing a post about Biochemistry. Two birds. One stone. But if I have no desire to read about it, and my grad school acceptance depends on it, chances are good you don't want to hear about amino acids and functional groups, either. If so inclined, would you mind terribly to read the chapters and give me the CliffsNotes version?

The truth is, these last couple months have been trying. They've tested my patience, my relationship(s), and sent ripples through my existence. I suppose we all need times like these to retain a healthy perspective, but I'm over it. I'm emotionally exhausted. I've let these trials worm their way into my psyche, infusing doubt and resentment. Most days I'm fine, but some leave me wanting to walk away. Total physical and emotional abandonment of what has me in a funk.

The fact that I have a good life does not elude me. I also possess pretty healthy coping mechanisms. I'm not the girl that declares on Facebook that I "FHML" at the slightest hurdle. But lately it has been taking more work to see the class half full. In The Happiness Project, the author talks about the idea of pretending to be happy in a given situation. The idea is that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. Act like you like something, and you just might start enjoying yourself more. While reading that chapter I found myself appreciating the science behind the concept, but pretending to be happy about something is so, well, un-me. Why not, though? Perhaps it's about time I start acting like I'm content with where I am right now. Because overall I am. I just tend to focus on what's next as opposed to my everyday existence. To become easily overwhelmed by the funkiness. I have written numerous times about my difficulty living in the now, so why not make a concerted effort to change my bad mental habits? There is a lot to appreciate. Fall has begun, my schedule is lighter, and I have more time than ever to spend with Little Man. So this week I've taken action. I'm going to start enjoying more of what life has to offer... because happier-ness is a choice. (I totally fabricated that word. You see, I'm not unhappy. But I could be happier. Which is the point of the book and my new resolution.)

On the path to less stress and a more effortless existence, Mario and I have begun a debt snowball system. I've mentioned this before, but the wheels are in motion. We sat down and wrote a budget. We definitely got the (snow)ball rolling, to the tune of several hundred dollars. On one credit card. We spent our entire paycheck on paper so there would be no frivolous spending. Bills got paid immediately so they would leave our checking account, and everyday money was sorted into envelopes. I had to actually enter the lobby of the bank and withdraw a large sum of cash for monthly expenses. It was weird. Gas, groceries, miscellaneous purchases, eating out, and "blow" money were sorted based on our predetermined budget for each. ("Blow" money is Dave Ramsey's term for cash that can be spent on whatever one chooses. My morning coffee will take up a lot of that. Mario and I both get an envelope of cash each month... and what we do with it is our business.) Budgeting is tricky, and I'm still figuring out the nuances of an envelope system. For instance, this morning I went to Target to grab some things. I bought household goods, food, and a sweater. One purchase, three envelopes. I don't carry all them with me, so I had to sort through the receipt and calculate how much to return or take from the various envelopes. But I paid with cash. No debit card. I know what I bought and was more selective with my purchases. I printed Target coupons before going and saved a good chunk of change. I like this system and the feeling of control and organization over our finances it offers; I'm sure with time it will become easier to navigate. Yesterday, after Kiddo asked for an expensive fresh-squeezed juice from the food co-op (which would have come from my blow money), I decided it would be awesome to get him in on the action. Because our house is officially on the market (as of last Friday), constant upkeep is necessary. We spend about 15 minutes every evening tidying up so that it doesn't feel overwhelming, and he's been a big help. I think he deserves his own blow money. At times I've wondered if Jared has been worried that all this money talk and house-selling activity indicates some sort of hardship. It doesn't, and I've tried to reiterate that we are doing this because we want to. Because we want to move next summer. Because anything that makes life easier and less stressful is a good thing. He is definitely old enough to join in and I can't think of a better way to teach him the benefits of being debt-free and saving for the things we want (and the future).

It turns out I had a lot to say. As I mentioned before, we put our house on the market. After a lot of thought and discussion, we decided to go ahead and list it. Our realtor had some promising news (before it was, um, a lot less promising), so I'm choosing to be optimistic. You never know if there is someone out there looking for exactly what our house has to offer.

In the spirit of looking at the bright side, and changing my outlook to change my life, here's a glimpse into what my existence has looked like as of late... through a rosier perspective:

We live about 25 minutes from town. Tuesdays and Wednesdays Kiddo has activities at the Y. On Tuesdays there is enough time between school and play to go home for a bit. The time gap is much smaller on Wednesdays. I have decided to be intentional with that time. Over the last several weeks, I pick Kiddo up from school and we spend quality time together... usually a visit to a local coffee shop to do homework and enjoy a treat. Yesterday I had him walk the short distance from his school to the town square. I sat on a bench with a clear view of his walk, read a book, then we caught up on each others day over cupcakes. I've never met a more beautiful creature than that boy. While the weather is nice, he will continue to walk down to that bench to meet me.

One of Kiddo's favorite pastimes in the whole world is laser tag. There is a big arena about 90 minutes from our house, and when in the area we stop and let him play. He comes out soaked in sweat and grinning from ear to ear. While he plays, Mario and I do, too. We buy a cup of tokens and play games. Finding our inner kiddo is so important. As a grownup, it's easy to forget to let loose once in a while. This particular visit I was on fire.

The other morning Mario and I had a quick breakfast date before meeting with friends. This particular restaurant had the worst coffee. Have I mentioned how expressive my husband is? I snapped a few photos of his reaction to the brew's tar-like quality. We laughed. Hard. These moments remind me of why I committed to be with this dude forever and ever.

I've always been a sucker for cute woodland creatures. Target has a whole line of woodland-themed decor right now. I want all of it. Love, love, love. Perhaps a piece or two should make it into the October budget. Or onto my birthday list (October 10th in case you are feeling generous).

It's officially fall. As told by the glow-in-the-dark poop on the Halloween rack at Target. What did they feed that animal?! // Kohl's is open! Silly? You try buying a kid's white button down shirt for a school program with only a Target and JC Penney in town. // I'm so studious. Actually, I'm plagued with eye allergies thanks to bursting maples everywhere I turn. My eyes are constantly irritated (and I scratched my eye recently, calling for prescription eye drops), so contacts are out of the question. It's taken some adjustment, but I like mixing up my look. // I saw this cookbook at an antique bookstore Kiddo and I visited last week. It was darling and made me smile. // I accidentally made a high bun. I know mastering "The Bun" is a requirement of being a blogger, but this girl is not so talented. I literally threw it into a knot to get ready for CrossFit and discovered that I'd done it! Perhaps I can do it again, with more intention. (See how optimistic that was?) // Kiddo's school has a yearly yard sale fundraiser. I helped set up then spent the night with a couple other moms to watch the stuff and so we could be ready at the crack of dawn. I had two (whoa!) mojitos at a place called Margaritas and spent a great evening with a couple of amazing ladies. // A pair of flats I have had for a while decided to attack my feet. There was blood and blistering. (Gross, but we've all been there.) I had several more hours before heading home, and could barely hobble, so I stopped by a local shop to find something to get me through the rest of the day. These Sanuk slip-ons were $10 marked down from $55. Score! I've been wearing them a lot while my feet heal.

Last Friday started with CrossFit, then a day spent setting up the yard sale, running home to meet the realtor,  and returning to spend the night. Saturday morning came waaay too early. When we got home that afternoon I crashed on the couch for a couple hours which is so unlike me (I'm a nap-phobe). My furry boyfriend slept on my chest the whole time. He's such a snuggle bug. Swoon. On a side note: we volunteered to provide cupcakes for the bake sale that goes on during the yard sale. Mario made them because I ran out of time, but he didn't have time to make frosting. We served them anyway and I let it go. Making leaps and bounds in this resolution! // Kiddo is a natural photographer. He has such a great eye. I came across my last camera and decided it should be his. I can't wait to see life through his eyes. // Too many carbs. Food regret. I need an intervention. // My perch from the bench while I wait for Kiddo, book in hand. // I think CrossFit is trying to kill me. Since I've been back, the WODs have been craaazy. In case you were wondering, this means the first round includes 21 reps of each move, then 18 of each and so on for a total of 84 reps of each move. Today was 100 burpees and 100 kettlebell swings in 12 minutes. It hurt. A lot. // I love this kid. Even after all this time, I could still just sit and watch him. // His and hers lattes. Mario spilled his across the table and down the front of me. It's not the first time he's poured a beverage on me and it probably won't be the last. That boy is all thumbs. I laughed. // It's officially cardigan weather. Happy girl, right here.

An unintentional update courtesy of some strong coffee.

You have got to succeed in doing what is necessary.

Winston Churchill

We have a lot on our plate for today. I have a list, organized by store, sitting on the edge of my desk. I have a wad of coupons carefully compiled and waiting to save us a bit of dough. My husband, however, is taking his sweet time getting out the door. What better time to write a blog post? (Investing my time in something stimulating will stave off annoyance at his snail-like ways.)

There are a few things I'm treasuring right now:

1// Time with my favorite young man. Oh, I love that kid. He has been patient and so incredibly helpful while I pack up the house. We spent more time in his room boxing up knick-knacks and stowing away some of his Legos. He didn't bat an eye or complain once.

Last week we went to the new Percy Jackson movie together and had a great time. I didn't even mind that it was in 3D.

Yesterday, while grabbing a few things at Target, he turned down the opportunity to hang out in the toy section while I scoped out bathroom rugs. I'd rather hang out with you, Mom. I literally melted into a puddle on the spot. All the worries and cares that normally seem huge are quite miniscule while spending time with him. He's all that matters.

2// A new found blog has my heart going pitter-patter. I read about the curator of the site in the September issue of Martha Stewart Living, a grocery store line impulse buy. She photographs one object (or a small collection of objects) found in nature every day. It's simple and beautiful.

3// As I pack up the house a bit, rearrange, and clean, I often enjoy background noise. Earlier this week I discovered the show Castle. It's lighthearted and fun, and the vast majority of the episodes are appropriate for Kiddo. Mario watched an episode with us and caught the bug, so now we are having mini Castle marathons thanks to reruns. Mario and I often watch Law and Order before bed, but after years of watching our DVR is full of episodes we've already seen. It's nice to have 5 seasons of unwatched episodes ahead of us.

4// Our master bath is painted in a light grey and came with a buttery yellow sink. Our bedroom is a lovely yellow as well. Our realtor suggested tying it all together by adding yellow accents in the bathroom when the time comes to stage it for potential buyers. I have never really gone gaga for chevron, but I fell in love with the "sun eclipse" line at Target. (The photo hardly does it justice color-wise . . . it's actually quite vibrant.) It captures all the shades of grey and yellow between the two rooms perfectly. We snagged a bath rug and a set of towels. We haven't purchased new towels in 7+ years, so it was long overdue. Two birds, one stone.

5// I first heard this song in the background of an ad for a new show and it immediately caught my attention. It's hauntingly beautiful and has been on repeat in my head for days.

Knocking so many things off my ever-revolving list has me feeling optimistic. My class starts on Monday but, as I mentioned before, will only take up four hours per week of class time. This gives me plenty of room to study for the upcoming GREs and to continue with the work on our house. I hope a job is in my near future, but for now I'm enjoying the lack of how am I going to balance everything?! stress that usually comes at the start of a semester. I'm coming back as a college grad with one remaining grad school prerequisite to get under my belt. That's exciting! When the job thing is accomplished, I'll work on navigating the logistics of after school care, studying, etc. Until then . . . one thing at a time.

Perhaps I'm a little behind trend, but my love this Thursday is animal head-themed decor. Particular those belonging to the phylum Cervidae. That includes deer, moose and caribou. I learned that term last semester in Vertebrate Zoology...and I think I found my one and only opportunity to use that rather random bit of knowledge. Even here it was a stretch, so I am going to move on.

I am not a hunter, nor would I want a real head mounted on my wall. My house doesn't have even the slightest rustic feel. I don't eat wild game or beef, and occasionally I have a "I can't eat meat anymore!" moment. My husband grew up on a cattle ranch in rural Montana. His friends and family hunt for food (and some for sport). I certainly respect the lifestyle...it's just not me.

Despite all the reasons not to like it, I am really attracted to this funky trend of mounting resin or ceramic heads. I can't explain it. Perhaps it is the art deco feel that makes it seem less, well, like mounting an animal head.

I am really liking moose heads in particular. I found a resin one on Amazon for a reasonable price, and intend to spray paint it white and mount it inside an ornate frame (my vision is similar to #1, below). I think I even managed to get Husband on board. I figure it will either turn out amazing and we will love it, or it will be a total DIY disaster. Either way, my head is in the game. See what I did there?

1. I love this take on the trend. I just wish I could find a head that cool at a local store. [Silver deer head tutorial by The Velvet Door]  2. I looked at these little abstract horns a zillion times over the holidays but never pulled the trigger. I finally decided they must be mine, and gone. Now I can't find them anywhere. Bummer. [Aries horns by Nate Berkus for Target]  3. How cool is this paper mache head with tree branch horns?! Perfection. You can find the complete tutorial courtesy of Better Homes and Gardens. You will probably see my take on this in the months to come.  4. I ordered this adorable fawn print from my new favorite art website, Society 6. I can't wait for it to show up in my mailbox.

5. Another Society 6 find. If the head thing doesn't pan out, I can always frame this moose head print. The colors are just lovely.  6. I love this DIY newsprint wrapped deer head. It would look so cool in an office or library (because I have a library in my dream house).  7. This may be my all time favorite animal head project. I am totally digging Kim's Rustic Industrial Mantle.

There were easily 20 versions of this project I could have posted. It was so hard narrowing it down. Just type "deer head" into Pinterest and you'll see what I mean. Patterns and textures on a million different mediums...people are amazing.

I found a resin moose head. I found the frame. I found the perfect tutorial. Now I need to get on it.

Getting in touch with my wild side

This is my first time participating in the High Five for Friday link up. I've always been there in spirit, but not virtually. This week I've decided to mix things up around here. Getting caught up in followers, advertising, and page views made me lose sight in why I started this little guy: For the fun of it. To write. Self-expression. To connect with like-minded people. But it became about something else.

The ego is officially gone. Abandoned. So are the link-ups/hops that require I follow a gazillion people, whether I want to or not. I'm rediscovering my blogging roots and I can't think of a better way to celebrate this perspective-altering week than giving a shout-out to those things that make me happy. Here goes.

1. Could I be more obsessed with this big guy? No. Obsessed. There's something about him curling up in my lap that makes everything else seem irrelevant. It's hard to stress in the presence of this face. 2. It's been said a million times, but I'm going to say it again: Starbucks+Target=Brilliance. I needed a mental break. It turns out that I don't care for the Creme Brûlée latte, but I didn't even care. I got to decompress, latte in hand, surrounded by happy things. 3. Mister Vista playing with his skunk toy. My husband and I sat on the floor and watched him for a long time. It was hilarious. We learned early on, after numerous instances of him stealing my son's black and white Webkins, that he favors skunk-like toys. 4. We've lived in our house 5 years, and this is the first time we've decorated these trees on either side of our front door. We've talked about it, but never actually followed through. We were seriously missing out. I drive up to our house and sit in the driveway, staring at them for several moments. Lovely and festive. 5. Our tree is decorated! I really do love the look and feel of a glittery, tree-adorned living room.

TGIF!

High Five for Friday: Cat, Christmas decor and Coffee

Friday, December 7, 2012

maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more...

Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas

I have a hard and fast rule: no Christmas until December 1st. Except for the holiday section at Target that went up in August. Because that store is my crack, my eyes have been accosted by that display several times.

So now that Mr. D has graced me with his presence, the dam has opened. I have my yearly handmade ornaments to plan, decorations to put up, gift ideas to ponder...and you, my friends, are going to hear all about it. Well, maybe.

Don't worry.  This isn't like the Love Channel on Sirius/XM. I'm not going to flip a switch and turn this into all Christmas all the time. I still have a child to push my buttons and a husband who conveniently has to travel for work during finals week (read: hang out enjoying the cinnamon rolls at a Holiday Inn Express). There will be non-Christmas merriment. But this girl has been freed of the constraints set by no one but herself. Well, now I'm confused.

What I meant to say is...Happy December. Put up your tree. Shop. Drink eggnog and other sugary-sweet drinks. We can work off the diabetes in January. After we make a resolution we won't keep. Wow, that took an ugly turn. Sorry.

Happy Weekend in December!

Christmas doesn't come from a store,

Saturday, December 1, 2012

Howdy, Folks! The past 7 days have been a real zinger. Not the actual Zingers, because Hostess is kaput. Is it weird that I'm all upset even though I've only had one or two Twinkies in my whole life? I guess I took comfort in knowing they were out there if I ever needed them.

Anywho...two quizzes, an exam, my husband's job, my button-pushing offspring, and my senior research presentation conspired to give me a heart attack. My stress levels were through the roof (which is why I have The Cold That Will Not Quit). Why all at once, Professors? Trying to kill this old gal?

Still, I made it to other side. Phew. And Husband is home from France. Now I can enjoy Thanksgiving and all it has to offer. And by offer, I mean a 5 day weekend. Duh.

It is Thanksgiving week, so it's only natural that I talk about food. As in, there hasn't been a lot of nutrition going on around here. Stress-relieving comfort foods were the name of the game. But I think I'm back on track. Just in time to swim in gravy.

1. This girl earned her Icee. Which I got at Target. Two birds. One stone. 2. Who owned her Icee tongue?  And teeth. I swear I'm a good brusher. I floss every day. Well, close to that. I get tired sometimes. Don't judge. But somehow that Icee manages to make me look like a hillbilly. 3. Hey, Orville! When a lady is in the midst of a crisis and needs cheddar microwave popcorn pronto, you don't give her half a cereal bowl's worth. Besides, the last thing I need to add to the stress heap is a broken tooth courtesy of the 1/2 cup of unpopped kernels at the bottom. No broken tooth, but a lot of broken dreams. Now I know why I never buy microwave popcorn. Fail. 4. While I was knee-deep in homework, Kiddo ate this entire jar of pickles. In one sitting. He's growing like crazy and eating like a rabid racoon...but geez. If I did that, I wouldn't be able to get my shoes on for a week. 5. Those crazy art students decorated the Student Center with canned food sculptures. I want to be an art major.

6. Target had this beauty last year, but I procrastinated thinking it would go on sale and it sold out. Fast. Determined not to let it slip through my fingers a second time, I pulled the trigger. And it was on sale for 15 bucks. Hurrah! [Merona Sequined Sweater] 7. Ebony and ivory, live together in perfect harmony... 8. A friend just got a new puppy! He is a tiny little nugget of sweetness. Upon holding him, I immediately went into "I want a puppy, too!" mode. Someone needed to throw cold water on me. Thank goodness I snapped out of it, because I do not want a puppy. Yes, I do. 9. I bought a plaid version of these Sorel snow shoes a couple years ago and love them like a turtle loves its shell (I wanted to say "like a fat kid loves cake" but thought better of it. Oh, I just did. Oops.). Upon seeing them recently in the Sundance catalog, I realized that they are, in fact, shoes. Which means it is perfectly legit to wear my slippers warm, comfy shoes in public. I found them for half the price at Sierra Trading Post. Order up a size. Sorel has its own definition of what constitutes a normal shoe size.

Happy Tuesday!

Icees, Twinkies, Orville and puppies...oh my!

So much of life, it seems to me, is determined by pure randomness.

Sidney Poitier

Last week was a crazy, disorganized, routine-distrupting kind of week. So when Thursday rolled around and I started to recreate some level of normalcy, I realized that I hadn't participated in Insta Tuesday. Bummer!

I'm back! In all my random glory! And between Halloween and Sandy, it's definitely random.

1) A belated birthday blanket from my lovely aunt showed up in the mail! I actually like it when gifts trickle in because I'm a firm believer in birthmonth celebrations. It is beyond cozy and smells like lavender. I don't ever want to wash it!
2) I've just discovered "Bursting Bobas." I'm not sure what they are exactly, but they are to froyo what roe is to sushi. Only they burst with fruity deliciousness. I've just created a disturbing mental image, I'm sure.
3) There was a whole lot of wandmaking going on in my house. The boys took the spindles off the back of an old chair, hollowed them out, stained them, and made proper wands. I did catch Kiddo cutting a lock of hair off the cat for the core of his wand...which made me wonder if, at the age of 12, we are not truly past the "hide the scissors" phase.
4) Husband's big boy wine cup. Which contained Three Buck Chuck. He's a classy fellow.
5) I demonstrated my domestic prowess by burning spaghetti. Who knew that was even possible?!
6) Tots (for breakfast) really do make everything better.
7) Target on Monday evening, right before Sandy hit New England. I've never seen it this empty...five minutes before closing there are more people than this.
8) New infinity scarf from Target! Wahoo! I talked about it the other day, but I love it so much that it bears repeating. Oh, and I realized that I may wear this headband too often since I was photographed wearing it twice in one week. It was a CVS bargain and I love it so. They had a BOGO sale, so I bought it in black, too.

Happy Tuesday Everyone! Get out there and VOTE!
